Children love to draw. Sometimes they don't have the words to express or convey what they are thinking, but when it comes to drawing, they are able to communicate more effectively. Not all artwork is created equally, though. Sometimes, you may find that your child's creativity ends up being a depiction of some violent images. This certainly catches parents off guard, and that's understandable, but rest assured it's not always a reason to worry.
It is important to realize that what we may perceive to be a violent image is just an innocent image in the mind of a child. For example, just because you think yu see blood or a gun in your child's artwork, doesn't mean that's what you're actually looking at. Speak to your child about what they have drawn and ask them to explain the photograph to you. You may be surprised to discover that red blotch painting is just a drawing of a juice spill and not the blood splatter you were imagining it to be.
If your child is clearly creating images of violence, rest assured that doesn't mean you have a problem. Expression is normal and they may be just drawing something they have seen on the news, or have seen on the internet. An occasional inappropriate image isn't a reason for concern, but we can tell you what you may want to look out for.
Red & Black Tendencies
There are a whole lot of colors in your marker bin. If your child selects red or black colors all of the time, this may be something you should look into a bit further. With a rainbow full of color options, it's normal that your child will select red and black from time to time, but if all their drawings require the use of these colors, this may be something you'll want to look into. Studies show that "if your child tends to use mostly red and black ink this is also a sign that therapists have identified as important. Using the color black a lot is often linked with childhood depression, and using the color red in excess can be a sign of anger and aggression," according to ABC Learning Center.
Sudden Changes
Taking a close look at your child's habits gives you a baseline of what their natural movements really are. During their down time, a child that typically draws cats and hearts is likely to continue doing so. Kids tend to habitually fall into comfortable drawing patterns, and the images they've begun to draw are repeated and quickly become your child's artistic comfort zone.
If your child is switching over from drawing images of the sky and the sun, and they suddenly start drawing violent images, it's important to note this drastic change. If there is really something bothering your child, it will be quickly uncovered when they suddenly change their behavior pattern. Try to talk with your children to see if there is something they should be telling you about.
Age Of The Child
Children of all ages can draw images that parents perceive as being violent. It's important to really isolate each situation before getting concerned about the content that your child is presenting. There is a very big difference between a 4 year old child drawing violent images and a 14 year old doing that very same thing.
Young kids have no filter and don't over analyze things very much. They will draw haphazardly, and quite often, they may not ever be aware of the fact that what they're drawing is inappropriate. They simply draw their emotions and thoughts freely. A teen, on the other hand, has full scope and understanding of what they're drawing, and if violent images appear regularly, or are depicted too graphically, this may be a good time to sit down and uncover the truth behind these actions.
Repetition
If a child repeatedly draws violent images, or seems to recreate the same violent image over and over again when they sit down to draw something, we may need to dig a bit deeper into what is going on. If a child has been exposed to a traumatic incident, it can take a real toll on their mental health. The true nature of a situation may be revealed in this manner, and the repetitive drawing may be a sign that there is something in your child's mind that they are trying to resolve on some level.
Other Behaviors
If your child is habitually drawing violent images and you also happen to notice them exhibiting other strange behaviors as well, this is a high alert situation which needs to be addressed immediately. Mood changes, changes in sleep patterns, and other troubling behaviors shouldn't be ignored, and are especially concerning when paired with the creation of images that are not exactly telling a peaceful tale.
